How you can Help Haiti, A listing of Disaster Relief Organizations

By Ms Chievous

You have heard about it by now. A quake with 7.0 magnitude struck the city of Port Au Prince. Reports are coming in slowly about the devastation that took place there. Bodies being pulled out of the ruble. Thousands are feared dead, millions will be affected. A disaster affects all of us in one way or another. For me the feeling in the pit of my stomach won't go away until I can do something about it. That's why I decided to collect all the information I can about charities taking donations for Haiti and put into one hub. If you are reading this and fortunate enough to have enough to give to others please feel free to do so in the links I have provided.

If you are trying to locate family..

If you are trying to locate family and friends please call U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at 1-888-407-4747 or 202-647-5225. The lines wil no doubt be busy, but keep trying.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is sending $200,000 in aid at this time. The website specifically states there is no call for volunteers at this time however donations are being accepted. Push the red donate button under the Haiti section

UNICEF USA

UNICEF has a website ( listed below) specifically for the victims of the Haitian earthquake.  Monetary donations can be given through your credit card right on that website, or they can mail you a form.

CARE

CARE also has websites just for the relief effort in Haiti.  Monetary donations can be given via credit card on this site. Site is listed below.

You can text!!!  If you want to do something RIGHT NOW you can text the  word HAITI to 90999 and ten dollars will be automatically donated to the Red Cross for disaster releif in Haiti! ( source, MSNBC.com)

Yele Haiti

Yele Haiti is the brainchild of Wyclef Jean. In fact it used to be the Wyclef Jean foundation. He wanted to find a way to give back.  Now he is using his influence to help other s in this time of disaster.  At this website you can make huge monetary donations. The Yele Haiti Website wishes to remind you that donations are tax exempt!  If you do not want to use the website then  you can text Yele with 501 501 to donate five dollars via your cell phone.

Doctors without Borders

Doctors without borders is another good organization that is actually providing us with a lot of the information about what is going on in Haiti. They report that the hospitals have received significant damage.  This site has a place for donations as well. Please visit link below.

These are just some of the more well known charities.  Right now there are countless more being placed out on the web.  If you have a concern that these websites might be fraudulant  then check them out with the better Business Bureau or the Charity finder.  Both links are placed below for your convenience.

This is a well-written hub that opens the way for would-be donors who can't find venue for their donations. Your sharing is much-appreciated.
