Famous Dragons
74
Dragons are no doubt the coolest of the mythological creatures. They are definitely most popular and have stood out time and time again in fantasy books and movies. Dragons represent power and excellence.
What are dragons? They are said to be a mixture of a cat, a serpent and a bird. In Chinese culture Dragons originate from fish. There are many different kinds of dragons, most all of them originate around the elements of the Earth. Fire dragons seem to be the most popular Besides being characterized by their fire breathing abilities they are also short tempered. There are also water dragons. They are said to be more positive and docile. Dragons appear in myths, legends and folktales around the world. Here are some of my top picks for famous Dragons. Aye there be dragons here!
Smaug
One of the most popular dragons that come to mind are Smaug. the infamous dragon of the Hobbit. This may have been the first dragon I have been exposed o in my childhood. Smaug was one of the dragons of Middle Earth. If you remember your Hobbit Lore correctly Smaug was the dragon that was slain by Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo had the fortune of finding an exposed patch on the beasts underbelly. The belly was covered in gold and gems. Smaug was a very witty dragon who loved riddles. J.R.R Tolkien even discussed how Smaug was able to hypnotise others with his eyes. Smaug was quite convinced he was undefeatable. Smaug was one of several dragons of Middle Earth.
Sleeping Beauty Dragon
OK maybe I Lied about the first connection with a dragon thing. I do distinctly remember a dragon from Sleeping Beauty that was quite ominous. The Evil Queen transformed herself into a a purple and black Dragon that was somewhat scary for a kid but yet beautiful. Fire Breathing and winged it went after prince charming. Can you believe they used the word hell in a Disney movie in that era?
Falcor
Falcor was a Luck Dragon from the 1984 movie the Never-ending Story. He assisted Atreyu in finding a cure for the empress so that things go back to normal.. Falkor was dog like in his character. He often asked for his ears to be scratched. Luck dragons are not fiercely strong or witty but just Lucky in everything they do. A luck dragon breathes blue fire Luck Dragons are said to be made of fire and air. Water can be deadly to them. Luck dragons also take in air and heat through their scales and are able to sleep while flying. But I don't think we have ever seen a movie prior to the Never ending Story about a boy riding on a Dragon's back. A Luck dragon is able to fly with out wings! He was a little too feathery for me But I did like his blue eyes and his deep laugh. The Neverending Story was Neverending with their characters and was a little ahead of their time. .
Dragon
Dragon, from the movie Shrek is the only Dragon I know tha can make lipsitck look good! , Simpily named Dragon, she was a ferocious foe to Shrek as he tried to save the Princess Fiaona. However she fell in love with Donkey and has been one of the main supporitng characters of the entire series. A classic fire breathing dragon, she and Donkey eventually have Dragon donkeys, Dronkeys, which are winged asses that sneeze fire. I think Dragons best performance was at the end of Shrek I when she was dancing to "I like big butts!"
Shrek Dance Party
Draco
Dragonheart was made in 1996 and starred Dennis Quaid as a knight.I really loved this movie.. and I loved the Dragon, Draco in it too. Maybe it had something to do with the fact Sean Connery was the voice for it? The Movie premise was simple and complicated! The dragon shared his heart with the father of Dennis Quaid Character. The father was in danger as boy and his mother brought him toe the great dragon for protection. The great dragon did revive the boy and he went back to his kingdom to the be the ruler How ever he turned hout ot be an evil ruler and thus perished. Dennis Quaid goes to Draco's lair to do battle as he blamed the dragon for his father's evilness. Draco proposed however that since he was the last of his kind they should go into a partnership. Their scheme worked like this: . The Dragon would Plunder unsuspecting villages. The knight would come along and be hired by the townsfolk. The knight would fake kill the dragon and both Dragon and knight would split the earnings.
Saphira
Saphira is the dragon from the series of books The Inheritance Cycleby Christopher Paolini. The movie Eragon was created in 2006. In the story line, Eragon found a blue dragon egg as a boy. He hatched it and raised it until she learned to fly and became full grown. She is one of the most beautiful dragons I have seen on the big screen and only the second female dragon. Saphira is the main character of the series of books by Christopher Paolini. The series Inheritance Cycleis three books long. Saphira goes on to hone her dragon skills in the second book the Eldest and the third book Brisingr, Eragon and Saphira continue their quest to overthrow the evil emperor. These series of books were a part of USA Today's top 150 picks for young readers. I am not a young reader but I may aquire the series. I did not know about the two other books!
The Newest addition to my Dragon collection is Toothless, the Night Fury from the movie, How to Train Your Dragon. When I first saw the previews I thought to myself, What the heck kind of Dragon is that? I thought he would be void of character and personality. But as I watched his interaction with Hiccup, the boy viking I quickly fell in love with this Dragon. Although the regular townspeople feared this Night Fury, Hiccup was able to learn about Toothless's softer side. This misunderstood beast was always happy to share his regurgitated fish with Hiccup in return for repairing his damaged tail. I was delighted to see how the Dragon had cat like reflexes but played like a puppy. In the Book How to Train Your Dragon, Toothless was a much smaller and less feared dragon. The Producers believed it would be a more interesting story if Toothless were a little bigger and a little more ferocious.
Sometimes I talk to Dragons
Oh Yes I Often Do
Somtimes I talk to Dragons
Oh there have been quite a few
Dragons love to Converse on Many Things
The most favorite topic are wishes and dreams
Mere mOrtal muse them with their foolish ways
Their wishes seem to go on for days
But if you run into a bit of luck and your wishes are sincere
A Luck Dragon will find you and a bit of magic will appear
Hold onto your dreams and never lose faith
You never know where luck may find you
Sometimes I talk to dragons oh yes I often Do
The next time I see one I will make a wish for you!

Well...You sure hit my soft spot with this hub! Apart from being Mystique I also use names such as Dragon Wizard and my favorite one: Daikryztalryu(which is a mix of Japanese and English. Meaning: The Great Crystal Dragon) It is also my Totem animal! I love dragons a lot. And I enjoyed this hub so much, you wouldn`t believe it! Incidentally, I have a painting of Daikryztalryu made by a Mexican psychic painter. She did it for me about 5 or 6 years ago!
Thanks for sharing,
Thumbs up!
warm regards and dragon blessings,
Mystique
Oh Ms Chievous (great name), I read this hub with great interest. Great idea and I'm with Dohn, Why Didn't I Think of That?
I would like to point out to you and your fans here that there has been a slight oversight. Not that you could possibly mention all dragons everywhere.
Has anyone read any of the series about all the dragons of Pern by Anne McCaffrey? If you are a dragon lover, get to know these dragons and their dragon riders.
I've read this entire series at least twice, and I'm kind of excited that they are coming out with a move in 2011.
Very cool, or should I say hot! I can't say I knew much about dragon, other than they breathe fire and are scary. Thanks for bringing dragons to life in a more amiable way...I suppose I'm a water dragon.
hey i'm a dragon :D
or at least i'm born in the year of dragon. hehe
It's so funny but also scary :) What if we have them living among us???? Creepy...
No the celestrial dragons from china's mythology.

I'm surrounded by dragons !I like them so much ! I even have 1 tattoed on my back ! Cheers !
The Dragon.Do you know what it means to do it in China?
Of course Ms Chievous, there're so many famous dragons you didnt point out, but I thought this was just a list of your favorites. Well, here're some - Drake from Dragonheart, Vermithrax from Dragonslayer, Elliot from the old classic, Pete's Dragon, and Tiny Mushu from Mulan. There're so many others but I cant remember their names, or if they had any. Also in Mythology you have famous dragons like Hydra of Lernea. Dragons rule!
Love dragons!
I have one holding a pearl to bring me good luck - and my son and DIL just got a bearded dragon. All this counts, yes?
Thanks for the hub!
dragons breathing fire exciting hub.... nice one
Cant believe how dohn just made the exact comment I wanted to make! Lol. Anyways, its true, my animus is dragon. I'm thick-skinned, I fly - metaphorically, I'm strong, and I breathe fire. :) yeah, watch out for the Hobbit movies, I know I am. Btw I already did something on dragons on the D part of my Mythological Creatures hub series. But it its more of a general descriptive! Great hub!
I am a dragon! LOL. Anyhow, great stuff! I really enjoyed this and am now kicking myself that I didn't come up with the idea for this hub (how could I be so numb?). But good for you! I hope everyone else enjoys this as much as I did!
BTW, did you know that there's a Hobbit movie coming out in 2011 and 2012? I will be shown in two parts, just like Kill Bill. Peter Jackson is the executive producer and Guillermo del Torro is directing. I can't wait!
